January 2025 Newsletter: A Healthy Start to 2025

Thank you to Drs. Shannon McPherson PT, DPT & Julie Pettit-Lane PT, DPT for contributing this month!

As we step into January, many of us are filled with aspirations to lead healthier lives. Setting New Year’s resolutions around fitness and wellness is a great way to boost your physical health and overall quality of life. Whether you're looking to get into shape, stay fit, or simply maintain a healthier lifestyle, we have some helpful tips and strategies to guide you along the way.

How Can I Set Realistic Goals? The key to achieving your fitness resolutions is not just about setting a goal, but making it achievable and sustainable. The CDC recommends that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. This can be broken down into manageable parts:

  • Frequency: Aim for 30 minutes on most days of the week. This can easily be spread out over 5 days.

  • Intensity: Moderate-intensity activities should elevate your heart rate and induce light sweating, while still allowing you to hold a conversation. By incorporating different activities, you can keep your routine exciting and engaging!

How Can I Stay Consistent?

  • Schedule It: Treat your workouts like important appointments. Set specific times each week and stick to them.

  • Buddy Up: Find a workout partner to help hold you accountable and make exercising more enjoyable.

  • Track Your Progress: Use a journal or an app to log your activity. Seeing your improvements can motivate you to keep going.

  • Make It Convenient: Choose activities that fit your lifestyle and can be done close to home. This reduces barriers to participation.

  • Mix It Up: Variety keeps your routine fresh. Try new classes, outdoor activities, or team sports to engage different muscle groups and prevent boredom.

How Can Physical Therapy Help? Engaging in physical activity can sometimes lead to discomfort or injuries, particularly if you are starting a new routine. This is where physical therapy comes in. A licensed physical therapist can:

  • Assess Your Current Fitness Level: Establish a safe and effective exercise plan tailored to your individual needs.

  • Educate You on Proper Form: Learn how to perform exercises correctly to minimize the risk of injury.

  • Provide Rehabilitation: If you’re recovering from an injury, a physical therapist can design a rehabilitation program that facilitates a gradual return to activity.

  • Offer Strategies for Pain Management: If you have chronic pain or ongoing conditions, physical therapy can help build strength, flexibility, and endurance while managing pain effectively.

Remember, it’s always best to speak with a healthcare professional before starting any new exercise regimen, especially if you have underlying health concerns.

As you set out on your path to a healthier you this January, embrace the journey with patience and determination. Let’s make this year one of health, vitality, and resilience!

Best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year!
